Five Pounds in My Pocket

I came to this country with five pounds in my pocket

From Pakistan to Birmingham- Stories of New Beginnings

PAKISTAN PHOTO FESTIVAL FELLOWSHIP PROJECT | BY Shaista Chishti

Migration has brought about, and continues to be responsible for, some of the most momentous social, economic, and political changes in the contemporary world. Over the years, millions of people have moved from their rural homes in search of better paid work, usually in cities many thousands of miles away. Their movement has precipitated many dramatic changes, no less in the societies they left than in the ones they joined. This project explores the challenges and experiences of Pakistani’s who migrated to Britain, and in particular Birmingham, during the mid to late 1900’s. How they assimilated and how they built lives in a new culture, arriving often with just five pounds in their pocket.
